2013 International Contemporary Art Fairs invade New York, and leave ART EVERYWHERE !!

For the uninitiated, the second week of March in New York City can be intimidating and overwhelming as it swells with activity playing host to another installment of The International Contemporary Art Fair(s) comprised most popularly by The Armory Show, PULSE NY, SCOPE NEW YORK and VOLTA NY. Two additional fairs which deserve much attention are the NEW CITY ART FAIR and MOVING IMAGE.

THE ARMORY SHOW (www.thearmoryshow.com), a leading international contemporary and modern art fair and one of the most important annual art events in New York, takes place every March on Piers 92 & 94 in central Manhattan. The Armory Show is devoted to showcasing the most important artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries. In its fifteen years the fair has become an international institution, combining a selection of the world's leading galleries with an exceptional program of arts events and exhibitions throughout New York during the celebrated Armory Arts Week.

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair (pulse-art.com) is the leading US art fair dedicated solely to contemporary art. Through its annual editions in Miami and New York, PULSE provides a unique platform for diverse galleries to present a progressive blend of renowned and pioneering contemporary artists, alongside an evolving series of original programming. The fair’s distinctive commitment to the art community and visitor experience makes PULSE unique among art fairs and creates an art market experience that is both dynamic and inviting.

SCOPE NEW YORK (scope-art.com) has solidified its position as the premier showcase for international emerging contemporary art and multi-disciplinary creative programming, with over 60 art shows spanning more than a decade. SCOPE’s extensive reach enables an unrivaled opportunity for networking with art patrons, creative professionals and a culturally relevant public audience. Renowned for presenting the most innovative galleries, artists and curators, SCOPE Art Shows in Miami, Basel, New York, London and The Hamptons have garnered extensive critical acclaim, with sales of over $450 million and attendance of over 700,000 visitors.

VOLTA NY (ny.voltashow.com) is an invitational show of emerging solo artists’ projects and the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived in 2008 by Artistic Director Amanda Coulson as a tightly-focused, boutique event that is a place for discovery, a showcase for relevant art contemporary positions regardless of the artist's or gallery’s age.

Moving Image (www.moving-image.info), the contemporary video art fair, was conceived to offer a viewing experience with the excitement and vitality of a fair, while allowing moving image-based artworks to be understood and appreciated on their own terms. The newly formed Moving Image Curatorial Advisory Committee for New York 2013 is inviting a selection of international commercial galleries and non-profit institutions to present single-channel videos, single-channel projections, video sculptures, and other larger video installations.

The NEW CITY ART FAIR (www.newcityartfair.com) is the only contemporary Japanese art fair in New York City. The NEW CITY ART FAIR focuses on showing original works by Japanese artists, with an aim to present contemporary Japanese art to fans worldwide. The NEW CITY ART FAIR opened its doors in New York in March 2012, then later that year in November held its second edition in Taipei, where it attracted the attention of 35,000 visitors.

So, whether you're looking to kill a couple hours or a couple days, head into New York City and check out the art fairs and their related parties. You're guaranteed to see at least one new work you've never seen before.

Happy exhibit hopping !!
